What is Create?

Create involves synthesizing and organizing elements to achieve the generation of a new structured whole. Creating is generating new products, ideas, or ways of viewing things by combining knowledge in original ways. Creation requires imagination, innovation, execution and the ability to synthesize diverse elements into something new and meaningful.

The original taxonomy placed "Synthesis" (similar to Create) below Evaluation, the revision we use in our framework emphasizing that creation is a higher-order thinking skill. Creation requires students to draw upon all other cognitive processes—remembering information, understanding concepts, applying knowledge, analyzing components, and evaluating quality—and integrate them to produce something novel. Create involves the three main cognitive processes, generating, planning, and producing.

AI Literacy Connection

AI can generate or create content, but it is fundamentally different from human creation. AI recombines patterns from training data combined with your prompt engineering; it doesn't truly innovate, understand context, or create with purpose and meaning. Human creation involves intentionality, values, contextual judgment, and genuine originality that AI cannot replicate.

Honing AI literacy and human-AI collaboration through creation might look like, using AI as a brainstorming partner while working through original ideas; using AI-generated content as raw material to transform and mold, evaluate and improve, not finished products to submit; emphasizing and understanding the essential differences between human creativity and AI generation; analyzing deliverables that involved AI in their creation; Help students understand that true creation involves synthesis of knowledge, experience, and values—not just pattern recombination of training data and prompts; centering creative work that requires human judgment, originality, and purposeful innovation.
